Surbiton Cycles Thames Ditton Marina
When Barnaby left his job at Specialized UK in January 2010 after 20 years, he wanted to open a bicycle shop in his home town of Surbiton that would provide brilliant products and expert advice with the homely, reliable service of a good local independent business.
So when he found a little dilapidated old office and storeroom at Thames Ditton Marina he thought it was perfect. His disbelieving friends and family said
“Are you insane?? How are you going to make a bicycle shop out of this?!”

But Barnaby ignored their foolish concerns, and after six months of blood, sweat, tears, and a lot of builder’s dust, Surbiton Cycles Marina was open to the public.

Tales soon got round of the marvellous products, fantastic location (huge car park in which to test ride the bikes), the staff’s million years of combined experience in the bicycle trade, as well as their ability to have a ruddy good laugh with customers, and Surbiton Cycles quickly thrived. In October 2010 it was nominated for Best New Business at the Kingston Business Awards and awarded the Highly Commended position, which really was brilliant.
But in summer 2011, Barnaby got ants in his pants. He wanted another local bike shop to provide bicycles to the lovely people of Surbiton and beyond, and, after many months of hunting, he found yet another dilapidated old building in Surbiton High Street…
Surbiton Cycles High Street
“Are you insane?”
his friends and family asked again, clearly not having learned from last time.
But it turned out Barnaby was not insane (at least not in this way), and this rundown building at the bottom of St Mark’s Hill, previously part of the St Mark’s Tavern pub, went from this in November 2011…
